Love & Math: The Heart of Hidden Reality (2015 Euler Book Prize)

In Love and Math, renowned mathematician Edward Frenkel (University of California, Berkeley), the 2008 FSMP Research Chair's laureate, reveals a side of math we’ve never seen, suffused with all the beauty and elegance of a work of art. Mathematics, he writes, directs the flow of the universe, lurks behind its shapes and curves, holds the reins of everything from tiny atoms to the biggest stars.

Awarded the 2015 Euler Book Prize, Love and Math tells two intertwined stories: of the wonders of mathematics and of one young man’s journey learning and living it. Having braved a discriminatory educational system to become one of the twenty-first century’s leading mathematicians, Frenkel now works on one of the biggest ideas to come out of math in the last 50 years: the Langlands Program, considered by many to be a Grand Unified Theory of mathematics.

Mathematics without Apologies: Portrait of a Problematic Vocation

What do pure mathematicians do, and why do they do it? Looking beyond the conventional answers—for the sake of truth, beauty, and practical applications—this book offers an eclectic panorama of the lives and values and hopes and fears of mathematicians in the twenty-first century, assembling material from a startlingly diverse assortment of scholarly, journalistic, and pop culture sources.
The author is the mathematician Michael Harris (IMJ-PRG).
